Write a short, concise letter to the editor criticizing harper and demanding that he stop the ads and address the issues facing Canadians.

FRAMING: The Conservative attacks ads are a further attempt to Americanize Canadian politics and avoid debating the serious issue of the day. This political strategy demeans democratic politics and alienates people from the political process. Harper is trying to deflect attention from his own appalling record and his current hypocrisy regarding environmental policies.

Some points you could make - in addition to your own, of course.

• Stephen Harper is determined to demonstrate his contempt/disdain/disregard for the political process and for democracy by running personal attack ads.

• Harper repeatedly called the Kyoto protocol on greenhouse gas emissions a "boondoggle." Until the last few weeks he claimed he was not convinced that global warming is the consequence of human activity.

• Harper and the Conservatives are talking out both sides of their mouth at once: now talking about the need for more environmental regulation while pushing an investors’s rights agreement called TILMA - the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement - which will trigger massive environmental deregulation at the provincial and municipal level.

• Stephen Harper is desperate to distract people from the fact that he has for twenty years had contempt for the environment, opposed all environmental regulation, especially regarding the oil industry. He now wants people to believe he is green - by attacking other leaders.

• Ever since he was a policy advisor to Preston Manning, Mr. Harper has aggressively opposed strong regulations and heavy fines for corporate polluters, arguing this would damage their “competitiveness.” What’s changed?

• Stephen Harper is pushing a policy of deep integration with the US which will see virtually all important policy areas “harmonized” with the US. By using his sleazy attack ads he is busy harmonizing our politics, too.

• Stephane Dion accomplished almost nothing as environment minister under the Liberals but Harper’s record, his past statements and position, is the most appalling of any federal leader in fifty years.
