Urgent action on police provocateurs
August 23, 2007
We have always known that police agents are scattered amongst demonstrators - especially those targeting corporate globalization. This agenda is key to the increasing wealth of the elite and of compilations and they will take any measures necessary to protect it.
The reason it is so important to take the opportunity to respond to this is simple: every demonstration that involves physical confrontation or violence is undermined by it and the message is compromised.
What we need to do here is to not let this story die - if we can keep this story in the news and actually force the government to explain itself we can go a long way to placing doubts in peopler’s minds about such violence.
OUR GOAL: Every time in the future that Canadians see demonstrators dressed in black with masks on they say to themselves: “I wonder if they’re cops in disguise?”
FRAMING: The Harper government’s use of police provocateurs to foment violence at a peaceful demonstration demonstrates what we have been saying all along- that the deep integration/SPP agenda and its supporters are profoundly anti-democratic and are quite willing to violate citizens’ civil liberties and slander them. We demand a public inquiry into this incident - one that will determine how high up the political ladder this illegal action went.
Key elements:
-
state the strong evidence: that other masked demonstrators disavowed the three cops, that one of the provocateurs was seen speaking to a riots cop, that the three were assisted across the police line and that markings on the bottom of the shoes of the provocateurs and one of the cops showed that the shoes were identical - in other words police issue shoes and there is no police record of the “arrests” captured on video.
-
make the point that critics of the SPP and deep integration have claimed for three years that this agenda is secretive, anti-democratic and in the exclusive interest of the economic and political elite - this event just reinforces this claim
-
the response of the police and the Harper government adds to the crisis in civil liberties: arrogant and dismissive stonewalling
-
raise the question about all the violent incidents we have witnessed over the years at such anti-globalization demonstrations - were they are all fomented by the police, too?
-
demand a public inquiry into the incident to determine who was responsible
