When World Trade Organization (WTO) talks collapsed in Seattle last December, there was jubilation in the streets and relief within civil society everywhere. Seattle had been an educational triumph for civil society groups and a bust for trade liberalists. Thousands from around the world had gathered in Seattle to protest the harsh effects of free trade. They attended teach-ins, rallied in the streets and withstood tear gas and rubber bullets. Among them were many Canadians - ordinary citizens young and old, workers, environmentalists, students and human rights advocates.
