Stop the Bush-McCain Agenda
Stop Unfair Trade

 12pm, June 20, 2008

(At Rideau St, West of Sussex, Ottawa)

Republican presidential candidate John McCain is coming to Ottawa to meet with Canada’s business elite and we’re not invited — but we’re going to protest anyway. The Council of Canadians is inviting concerned individuals and organizations to a peaceful protest of NAFTA and the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) at John McCain’s speech to the Economic Club of Canada.

NAFTA has caused the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs, and given corporations unprecedented power to override local democracy.  But the tide is turning. Senator McCain’s visit to Ottawa is a desperate gambit in reaction to the rejection of NAFTA in the U.S. and Canada.

U.S. presidential nominee Barack Obama has committed to renegotiating NAFTA, but opposition to NAFTA goes much further. More than 50 members of Congress in the U.S. are currently supporting the recently introduced TRADE Act (the Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment Act), which calls for renegotiation of NAFTA and a slew of other unfair trade agreements, such as the WTO (World Trade Organization). McCain has also said 100 more years in Iraq "would be fine” with him, highlighting his dedication to less jobs and more war.

It’s time to renegotiate NAFTA, stop the SPP and reject the Bush-McCain agenda of putting corporate profits before people and the planet. NAFTA has meant riches for a few and shrinking spending power for the rest of us. So why is the Canadian government stuck in reverse, clinging to wishful thinking about NAFTA and rushing into new, unsustainable and anti-democratic continental agreements like the NAFTA-plus SPP, which just offers more of the same?

Renegotiate NAFTA!
Stop the SPP!
