War Resisters’ Support Campaign: www.resisters.ca
The War Resisters Support Campaign is a broad-based coalition of community, faith, labour and other organizations and individuals that have come together to support U.S. soldiers seeking asylum in Canada because they refuse to fight in the illegal war in Iraq.
The Campaign works on two fronts: supporting the material needs of war resisters when they arrive in Canada; and campaigning to persuade the Canadian government to provide sanctuary for U.S. war resisters.
The Council of Canadians supports the War Resisters’ Support Campaign.
Canadian Peace Alliance: www.acp-cpa.ca
The Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) is Canada's largest umbrella peace organization. Since its foundation in 1985 the organization has been helping member groups to act as a broad network, in order to provide a strong, coordinated voice for peace issues at the national level.
CPA member groups range from grassroots community groups to major pan-Canadian organizations. Its goals include redirecting funds from military spending to human needs; working toward global nuclear disarmament; making Canada a consistent leader for world peace; strengthening world institutions for the peaceful resolution of conflict; and protecting the rights of all people to work for peace, social & economic justice.
The Council of Canadians is a member of the CPA.
Ceasefire: www.ceasefire.ca
Ceasefire.ca is an initiative whose mission it is to provide people with Web-based tools to take political action and promote peace, disarmament and social justice.
Department of Peace: www.departmentofpeace.ca
This initiative seeks to establish a Department and Minister of Peace in Canada to change the dynamic of debate and decision-making in Cabinet and Parliament towards a culture of peace and non-violence at home and abroad. It calls for the creation of a new architecture of peace in Canada and the world to supplant the ancient architecture of war and responds to the question, "if the troops were brought home today, how could we assure that Canada will not commit troops to counterinsurgency or combat operations in the future?" Instead, the department would strengthen Canadian peacebuilding, peacekeeping and peace diplomacy efforts in concert with the UN.
