Council of Canadians meets with key European groups to deepen opposition against
Bruce Power's radioactive waste shipment
Amsterdam – Council of Canadians water campaigner Emma Lui will be in Amsterdam on Monday, April 18th to meet with key European groups including KIMO International and Nuclear Free Local Authorities to broaden opposition against Bruce Power’s shipment of radioactive waste to Sweden.
KIMO International (Kommunenes Internasjonale Miljøorganisasjon), a coalition of local municipalities dedicated to giving "municipalities a political voice at the international level" particularly on marine problems, and the Nuclear Free Local Authorities, "an umbrella group that includes 75 local governments throughout the British Isles,” have both condemned Bruce Power's proposed shipment.
Bruce Power plans to ship sixteen 100-tonne radioactive steam generators through the Great Lakes to Sweden. Although Bruce Power recently stated they will delay the shipment to consult with First Nations in Canada, they have proceeded with an application for a permit from the US Department of Transportation indicating plans to proceed with the shipment.
There are a number of concerns with the shipment including lack of public consultation and lack of an environmental assessment. The levels of radioactivity of the shipment exceed legal limits set out by the International Atomic Energy Agency's Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material by 50 times and threaten the drinking water of communities along the travel route.
The Council of Canadians and key European groups will discuss strategies to stop the shipment.
