Mock Burial on Parliament Hill as Canada – Colombia Free Trade Agreement Slated to Pass in the House
What: Media visuals- Tombstones, Giant Puppets of Prime Minister Harper , President Alvaro Uribe, placards, masks and messages of Colombian civil society.
Who: Human rights, labour, and civil society organizations will gather on Parliament Hill to bury Colombian human rights and Canadian political integrity, as the House of Commons votes on the Canada – Colombia Free Trade Agreement.
When: Monday, June 14. 2010, 2:30pm
Where: in front of the Peace Tower, Parliament Hill, Ottawa
Why: After more than a year of public debate and controversy the House of Commons will vote on Bill C-2 to implement the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement tonight while many questions remain about its impact on the human rights situation in Colombia.
A statement by labour human rights and civil society leaders will be issued following the 6:45 pm vote tonight.
Representatives from Amnesty International, Canadian Labour Congress, Council of Canadians, and the Canadian Council for International Co-operation are available for comment today.
