Council of Canadians in Geneva for the 7th WTO Ministerial
The seventh World Trade Organization ministerial will take place in Geneva from November 30 to December 2, 2009 – exactly ten years after the civil society and developing nations opposition shut down the Seattle negotiations in 1999.
The Council of Canadians is joining 170 global civil society organizations in Geneva this week, under the banner of the Our World is Not For Sale (OWINFS) network, to call for a “WTO Turnaround: No More Crises!”. Vice-chair Leo Broderick and trade campaigner Stuart Trew will be in Geneva participating in counter-ministerial events organized by OWINFS and raising concerns about the impacts of the WTO agenda in Canada and abroad.
The Council of Canadians believes that the WTO’s deregulatory agenda that prioritizes trade above all else is at the root of today’s converging crises – food shortages, climate change, financial chaos – and cannot be reconciled with government policies that would address these crucial issues.
Regular updates and photos will be posted throughout the ministerial to the Council’s trade blog: www.canadians.org/tradeblog.
