Global Trade Alternatives up for public debate
HALIFAX –Three trade specialists will be traveling the Atlantic Provinces to challenge the current “one-size-fits-all” thinking on international trade.
Council of Canadians Trade Campaigner Jean-Yves Lefort, Brian O’Neil of Oxfam Canada, and Jeff Moore of JustUs! Coffee Roasters Coop will be visiting eleven cities in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, late February and early March.
Lefort, originally from Cape Breton but now residing in Ottawa, says that the tour will focus on alternatives to the current system of corporate-dominated free trade.
"The fact is that NAFTA hasn’t worked for Canada; the FTAA negotiations have been completely stalled for over a year and the WTO will not survive another failure. It’s time to look at other models," states Lefort.
