Council of Canadians Gives Loblaws Its Holiday Wish List: Get GE Foods Off the Shelf!
(OTTAWA) Members of the The Council of Canadians will be picketing outside of Loblaws/Superstore in 31 communities this weekend, to pressure the company to eliminate genetically engineered(GE) ingredients from their products.
"Genetic engineering is an unnecessary and unpredictable experiment with the safety of our food. We don't want to buy it and we don't think Loblaws should sell it," said Nadège Adam, Health Protection Campaigner for the Council of Canadians. "At the very least these products should be labeled so we can choose not to buy them, Loblaws won't even do that. We have to ask, do they really respect us as customers when they don't respect our right to know?"
The action comes days after a recent announcement that Loblaws is launching an organic line of products, which the company says will be free of genetically modified ingredients.
"While we support Loblaws decision to promote organic food, this decision certainly raises a question: if one line of President's Choice products can be advertised free of GE ingredients, why can't all President's Choice products be promoted as GE-free? That would be the best present they could give to their customers for the holidays."
The group will be passing out pamphlets and postcards, and encouraging shoppers to write to Galen Weston, head of the Loblaws' chain of stores, calling on him to phase out GE ingredients from all the food they sell. Loblaws is the largest grocery chain in the country.
The events will be held in the following locations:
- In BC: Victoria, Mission, Kamloops, Bulkley Valley, Vernon, Richmond, Coquitlam, Vancouver, Squamish, Cowichan, Maple Ridge, Powell River and Kelowna
- In the Prairies: Regina, Edmonton, Swift Current, Lethbridge, Prince Albert, Red Deer
- In Ontario and Quebec: Guelph, Hamilton, Cambridge, London, Thornbury/Clarksburg, Toronto, Montreal
- In the Atlantic: Charlottetown, Halifax, Truro, Annapolis Valley, Wolfville
