Tar Sands: Dark Side of the Boom
Council of Canadians to Rally and March for No New Approvals
Edmonton - The Council of Canadians will bring the boom to the streets with a Rally and March for No New Approvals in the Tar Sands on Saturday, November 1. The rally will begin at 12:45pm at Veterans Park at 102nd Street NW and MacDonald Drive NW (across from the Crown Plaza Hotel) for a March to the Alberta Legislature.
The protest is part of the 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Council of Canadians, taking place in Edmonton this weekend, bringing together members and concerned citizens from across the continent to challenge the myths of continental energy integration. This year’s gathering will build on the demand for no new tar sands approvals, with panels, workshops, and the rally and march to the Alberta Legislature.
Founded in 1985, the Council of Canadians is Canada’s largest citizens’ organization, with members and chapters across the country. The Council works to protect Canadian independence by promoting progressive policies on fair trade, clean water, energy security, public health care, and other issues of social and economic concern to Canadians.
FEATURED RALLY SPEAKERS:
Maude Barlow, National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, Senior Advisor on Water to the President of the United Nations, and author of Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water
Dave Eggen, Director of Friends of Medicare and former Alberta MLA
