Re: Watercooler talk, April 18, 2007
While it was good to see an Ottawa Citizen editorial share some of my concerns about the future of water, it was shocking to see baseless accusations of "mindless anti-Americanism" directed at me.
Being critical of the Bush administration does not make me anti-American. In fact, I work closely with countless Americans who share my concerns. I sit on the board of directors of two prominent United States-based organizations, Food and Water Watch and the International Forum on Globalization, and am a fellow with the Washington-based Institute for Policy Studies.
Furthermore, it is not anti-American to point to the need for transparency, accountability and respect in Canada's relationship with the U.S. For this editorial to suggest that "a thirsty superpower will take what we refuse to share" only highlights that need.
I am not a "notorious anti-trader;" rather I support a rules-based system of fair trade that would benefit Canadians and Americans alike.
Let's stick to the facts and avoid personal attacks.
Maude Barlow
