Participants will explore the impact that further integration and policy harmonization will have on Canada’s freshwater resources and the provision of essential, public services.
Today 1.1 billion people lack access to clean, safe water and a further 2.6 billion lack access to basic water services, including sanitation. Growing water scarcity, combined with deeply inequitable access, pose an enormous environmental and human rights threat. An important debate has emerged as to the prescription for this crisis, pitting proponents of the privatization of water against a growing water justice movement.
Is water a commodity to be bought and sold through bulk water exports? Can the for-profit water industry provide clean, safe water for all? How can Canada steward its water resources in the face of agreements such as the Security and Prosperity Partnership?
