Workshop 5

Canada’s Foreign Worker Program: Security and Prosperity for Migrant Workers?

Description

This workshop will explore the position of migrant workers in the so-called "Big Idea" of continental deep integration. The SPP rests on a promise of unlimited access to resources from Canada and cheap labour from Mexico, which is to be fed into the U.S. big business machine. But what is Canada's role in relation to migrant workers? Federal Minister of Labour Jean-Pierre Blackburn said in a November speech that Canada's committment to migrant workers includes, "providing these workers with virtually the same labour and human rights as our own workers." We think that we can do better than that! In this workshop, we will survey some of the key issues on the topic and begin to create a different map of Canada for migrant workers.
