Workshop 15
Peace No More: Foreign Policy under Canada-U.S. Integration
Description
In this interactive workshop we will facilitate a discussion on the challenge of forging an independent and progressive foreign policy in the context of the push for North American integration. What are the connections between Canadian policy on Iraq, the occupation of Afghanistan and the continuing U.S. policy of global dominance? What role do U.S. policy makers see for Canada in their geo-strategic plans? How do Canada’s positions on human rights, global ecology and international development, all framed within a neoliberal economic model, fit within these plans? Is Canadian advocacy at the United Nations of the "Responsibility to Protect" an alternative to U.S. unilateralism or a justification for re-packaged colonialism? How can we strengthen the movement to get Canadian and U.S. troops out of the Middle East and opposition to North American integration by building links between the issues and the campaigns?
This workshop will be of interest to anti-war, peace and human rights activists, and all those interested in the impact of the Security and Prosperity Partnership on military and foreign policy.
