Workshop 1

Aboriginal Treaty Rights and Deep Integration

Description

Come to this workshop to learn more about how indigenous and non-indigenous peoples can work together to protect our communities from deep integration and build on the unique rights already secured by indigenous activists in Canada.

The struggle for local, bottom-up instead of top-down control makes the indigenous struggle worth looking at when talking about how to handle deep integration. Indigenous peoples in Canada are vulnerable to deep integration with the United States because of the globalization of the minimum standards that international trade relationships establish. Indigenous peoples in Canada have fought very hard to have land rights recognized through Canadian courts and protected under the Canadian Constitution. These Aboriginal and Treaty Rights are integral to the historic, constitutional and legal dynamics of Canadian sovereignty and will be challenged by what the Canadian government is giving up through deep integration with the United States.
