Workshop 11

Leaving NAFTA

Description

Suppose the U.S. blocks Canadian softwood lumber trade, defying NAFTA. What if a serious crisis in the Persian Gulf or the desire to curb greenhouse gases compels Canada to divert energy exports in order to meet Canadian needs? NAFTA would be a shambles. What would happen next?

This workshop will explore the mechanics of withdrawing from NAFTA. How would Canada leaving NAFTA affect tariffs and trade within North America and the rest of the world? What areas of policy flexibility would Canada regain by reverting to multilateral trade rules? What trade laws and restrictions would remain the same under WTO rules? These and other related issues will be explored in the Leaving NAFTA workshop.

Leaders

Scott Sinclair, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
Pierre Laliberté, Federation des travailleurs du Québec
