Workshop 14

A “NACC” For Profit: The North American Competitiveness Council agenda for Continental Integration

Description

When Canadian, U.S. and Mexican trade officials created the North American Competitiveness Council (NACC) last year, they said that "the purpose of governments is to create the environment necessary for business to prosper," and that the role of this new all-CEO body was simply "to tell them what needs to be done." Obviously government (governing) is about much more than helping large corporations make money. It's about democracy and consensus -- two concepts that are completely absent from the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP).

This workshop will expose the leadership role of the NACC within the SPP and explore some alternatives to the limited version of "competitiveness" driving its corporate agenda for Canada within North America. As a group, we will then prepare a list of our own recommendations for enriching democracy and diversifying our economy to protect the security and prosperity of all citizens, not only those of the richest one per cent.
