UN's Robert Sandford discuses water exports on CBC's The Current

October 11, 2007
Posted by Susan Howatt and

On Tuesday, October 9, Robert Sandford, the chair of the UN Water for Life strategy, discussed his new book, Water, Weather and the Mountain West., on CBC's The Current . The book is about the pressure on our hydrological systems from climate change, population growth and industry, and he sees Alberta as a case study for all that we do wrong with water by over allocating rivers and having no policy or adaptation strategy.

Part way into the interview, Sandford mentions the North American Future 2025 Project as an example of how myths about Canadian water are currently fuelling policy decisions that could one day lead to bulk water exports to the United States.

Documents from the U.S. Center for Strategic and International Studies' new North American project, which is being funded by the three NAFTA governments to help inform ongoing Security and Prosperity Partnership discussions, were leaked to the Council of Canadians earlier this year. The project summary claims that, “Juxtaposed to the relative scarcity of water in the United States and Mexico, Canada possesses about 20 per cent of the earth’s fresh water.”

This isn't true, says Sandford on The Current, and yet the 20 per cent figure is being used to justify bulk water diversions from Canada to the United States in order to attain "joint optimum utilization of the available water."
