Peter Julian
Peter was first elected to the House of Commons in June 2004. He was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Burnaby-New Westminster on January 23, 2006. He currently serves as the New Democratic Party’s Critic for International Trade and Gateways, Transport, Persons with Disabilities and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Formerly a manual labourer, Peter served as Executive Director of the Council of Canadians, of which he was a founding member in 1985. During his term, the Council played a leading role in the building of the Peoples Summit in Québec City, held to head off the proposed FTAA.
Prior to his election to the House of Commons, Peter served as Executive Director of the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (WIDHH). At the time, WIDHH won consecutive Canadian Consumer Choice Awards for Excellence, as well as lead in the building of the British Columbia Disability Employment Network.
In Parliament, Peter is fighting to expose the push by stealth for deep integration under both the Liberal and Conservative governments. He hosted the second Tri-National Forum to formulate people-centred alternatives to the deep-integration agenda, which included legislators and civil society representatives from Canada, Mexico and the U.S..
As NDP Trade Critic, Peter won the first-ever parliamentary hearings on the SPP from the Standing Committee on International Trade, held in the House of Commons this past spring. The NDP is continuing to increase pressure on the Harper government to suspend further implementation of the SPP, to organize a full legislative review and to hold meaningful consultations with civil society, culminating with a full debate and a vote in Parliament. Through its work in Parliament, including a national petition campaign, a national public forum tour hitting communities from coast to coast to coast (tour is set to launch in Ottawa on the National Day of Action Against the SPP on August 20), the NDP is continuing its efforts in the House of Commons to expose and halt the SPP agenda.
When Parliament reconvenes in the fall, the Standing Committee on International Trade will be debating a Motion brought forward by the NDP, which calls on the House of Commons to urge the Government of Canada to suspend further implementation of the SPP until there is a democratic mandate from the people of Canada, Parliamentary oversight, and consideration of its profound consequences on Canada’s existence as a sovereign nation and its ability to adopt autonomous and sustainable economic, social, and environmental policies.
Peter also spearheaded the opposition in Parliament to the softwood lumber sellout, underlining what Canada sacrifices in failing to protect the interests of our citizens.
