Gustavo Iruegas Evaristo, secretary for foreign affairs for the Legitimate Government of Mexico
A carreer diplomat, Mr. Iruegas joined the Diplomatic Corps in May of 1966. On April 18, 1982, he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador. In 1989 he obtained a Master’s degree in Military Administration for National Security in the National Defense College. Within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he worked as a councilor for the Minister and as General Director of several areas, including Information and Media, Consular Protection, United Nations System, Regional American Organisms, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Mr. Iruegas was also Control General and, later, Deputy Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean. During his work at the Ministry he was assigned to the Mexican Embassy in Cuba, Argentina and Mexico’s Permanent Mission before the Organization of American States. He acted as the Ministry’s Chief at the Mexican Embassy in Brazil and El Salvador, and represented his country as Business Attaché in Nicaragua and El Salvador.
Mr. Iruegas was appointed Mexican Ambassador to Jamaica, the Kingdom of Norway, with representation in Iceland, as well as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and the Permanent Representation before the Latin American Association for Integration (ALADI). He was also Consul General in San Diego, CA. U.S.A. From January to December 1995, Mr Iruegas was commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be part of the Government Representation for the Peace Talks in Chiapas. In April of 2003, he left the Mexican Diplomatic Corps, and from May of 2003 to December of 2005 he has taught at the Iberoamercian Universirty in Mexico City and, from 2004 to 2006, at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the National University (UNAM). Mr. Iruegas currently writes for the national newspaper La Jornada. On November 20, 2006, he was appointed Minister for International Affairs for the Legitimate President of Mexico.
