Harper government kills proposed GM labelling law while potentially criminalizing health products in Bill C-51

Posted by Brent Patterson and Stuart Trew

Harper talks a good line on food safety but his actions prove he cares less about your health than corporate priorities.

As reported by Greenpeace Canada on Thursday: “A private member’s bill giving consumers the right to know if the food sold in Canada contains genetically engineered (GE) ingredients was defeated in the House of Commons today by a vote of 101 to 156.

“The defeat of Bill C-517 effectively protects the economic interests of GE companies like Monsanto over the rights of Canadians to know what they eat.”

In June 2001, the Council of Canadians and more than 80 other groups supported by the late Liberal MP Charles Caccia's private member's bill C-287 on the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. Unfortunately, in October 2001 the House of Commons defeated C-287 in a vote of 91 to 126, despite an unprecedented 95 per cent support level for this kind of legislation among Canadians.

Harper is also making enemies across the country on Bill C-51, an act to make several amendments to the Food and Drug Act.

Not only will C-51 fast-track potentially dangerous new drugs to the market, but it could take many beneficial natural products off the shelves.

If the food and drug legislation is passed, “At the current rate of licensing failure, more than 70% of natural health products will be illegal,” says a fact sheet.

“Broad definitions will allow government agents to invoke enforcement on people who do as little as share a ‘therapeutic product’ with a friend. Garlic and many other foods are therapeutic products… Not ‘one’ person has ever died in Canada because of a Natural Health Product.

“Bill C-51 is not about Canadian Safety. Bill C-51 is about Big Pharma.”
