Vancouver Olympics to be “the largest security operation in Canadian history”

May 22, 2008
Posted by Stuart Trew

We know from SPP documents that Olympic security for the 2010 Whistler Games is being coordinated with Mexican and U.S. military forces. This week, the National Post reported that the Canadian Forces will be there with tanks and other goodies.

“CF support to this aspect of the V2010 Games will need to be discreet to the general public,” wrote General Rick Hillier in a 2006 Initiating Directive authorizing the military to begin cooperating with the RCMP, according to the Post. “CF ceremonial support to [the federal government] will be in the public eye to the extent desired by the [government]… In both cases, it must be understood that the CF shall remain in a supporting role and at no time should staff at any levels attempt to take the lead.”

The Post writes that “Security agencies, led and coordinated by the RCMP, are planning to be able to secure the 2010 Games against a number of threats, including natural disasters, terrorists, organized crime activity, cyber-threats to information systems and protests.”

Reporter David Akin also jokes that Canadian security forces are not known for being discrete, pointing out their over-the-top presence in Montebello, Quebec for the third annual SPP summit, where “Canadian Forces helicopters, with armed soldiers hanging out the sides, deterred canoes and motorboats along the Ottawa River.”

Akin doesn’t mention that the rock-wielding protesters at the summit were police officers, not protesters. And like in Montebello, security at the Vancouver Games seems aimed at protesters more than any credible terrorist threat.
