Was it worth it?

According to a recent CBC report, the August 21-22 SPP "Leaders Summit" in Montebello cost the Ottawa and Quebec police departments almost $11 million to "secure." And that's not even the final tally because the RCMP and Ontario Provincial Police were also involved and have yet to say how much they spent.

"The Quebec provincial police spent more than $7 million to secure the perimeter outside the Fairmont Château Montebello resort during the summit of North American leaders Aug. 20 and 21," wrote the CBC. "The Ottawa Police Service spent $3.7 million during the summit for policing in Ottawa, which is 60 kilometres west of Montebello, Que., the service confirmed Tuesday."

Those in Montebello at the time will tell you that police officers outnumbered protesters, who were there to denounce the secrecy of, and exclusive corporate access to, these Security and Prosperity Partnership meetings. They will also tell you -- and this is backed up by video -- that some of those officers were posing as rock-wielding protesters, making the massive dollar figure for policing the event even more ridiculous.

In fact, according to another CBC report from August 22, "[Montebello] Mayor Jean-Paul Descoeurs thanked the protesters for their manners. 'They left no graffiti. There was not a single incident of damage,' Descoeurs said."
