You’d never know it from the lengths our federal and provincial governments are going to in defence of NAFTA, but most Canadians think we should renegotiate the free trade and investment pact, says a new poll by Angust Reid.
According to the survey, which was released on July 22 but attracted very little media coverage, “52 per cent of respondents think their country should do whatever is necessary to renegotiate the terms of the commerce deal, up seven points since March.”
Interestingly, that result was the same across all parties except the Greens, where only 49 per cent felt that Canada should do whatever it takes to renegotiate. Yes, more than half of Conservatives think we should renegotiate NAFTA!
“Conversely, 18 per cent of respondents want Canada to continue to be a member of NAFTA under the current terms, and 11 per cent believe the country should do whatever is necessary to leave the commerce deal.”
Furthermore, “When asked which country has benefited the most from NAFTA, only seven per cent of respondents mention Canada, while 46 per cent say the U.S. has come out ahead, and 30 per cent think Mexico has done better.”
The full poll results can be found here.
