Keeping our bread GE free: The battle is far from over!

On May 20, 2004, biotech giant Monsanto shocked the world by announcing its plans to shelve its controversial genetically engineered (GE) wheat.

Many of us who had been campaigning against the genetic engineering of our wheat are celebrating this hard earned victory. There is no denying that widespread consumer rejection is the reason behind Monsanto’s unexpected decision to abandon its lucrative project.

While it is important for all of us to celebrate this turn of events, we must continue to maintain a watchful eye. We may have stopped Monsanto’s plans to commercialize its wheat but many other biotech companies plan to submit applications for other GE wheat varieties.
