Patenting of Lifeforms

The genetic engineering of our food supply is not the only concern brought about with the advent of biotechnology. In courtrooms and regulatory institutions around the world, another battle is being waged. It is the battle over the biotech industry’s right to patent GE crops – and therefore claim ownership of these living organisms.

More importantly, the biotech industry’s ability to patent lifeforms has given way to the commodification of life, allowing them to sell, buy, or trade the very basic building blocks of life for a sizeable profit.
