G.E. Foods

Genetic engineering (GE) is a relatively new technology, which allows us to manipulate the genetic make-up of a given organism. In the case of foods, genetic engineering usually involves the insertion of genes from a specie into the genetic make-up of another specie. For example, GE corn, a popular ingredient found in many foods, has been crossed with a bacterium to make the corn resistant to certain herbicides.

GE products have entered our food supply even though little scientific study about its health risks has been conducted. Scientists are still unsure if inserting new genes into foods can create new toxins and allergens hazardous to human health. The technique for inserting these genes from non-food species is quite imprecise and very unpredictable.
