Food

Canada is under pressure from both the United States and business interests within Canada to "harmonize" its regulations with those of the U.S. While having common policies with our largest trading partner may sound practical, the reality is a dumbing-down of our regulations and weaker protection for the safety of the Canadian food supply. Meanwhile, U.S.-based transnationals and the U.S. government are pushing an agenda of factory farming and genetically engineered food production.

The Council of Canadians worked for many years to oppose genetic engineering and stop the growth of factory farming in Canada. Two new organizations have recently been created to work on these important issues: the Beyond Factory Farming Coalition and the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN).

On this section of our site, you will find information about what you can do to fight genetically engineered crops in your community. You will also find information on how to stand up for food security and food sovereignty, in the face of the push for deep integration of Canada’s standards and regulations with the U.S.

For more information on GE foods, contact the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network at (613) 241-2267 or coordinator@cban.ca.

For more information on factory farming, click here to visit the Beyond Factory Farming Coalition’s website, or call 1-877-955-6454.

Beyond Factory Farming has launched a counter campaign to the Manitoba Hog industry's attack on Bill 17 which will soon be in Second Reading in the MB legislature. Bill 17 is the law that will make the current partial moratorium on new factory hog farms permanent. BFF and grassroots groups in Manitoba want to get Bill 17 amended so that the moratorium would cover the whole province.
