July 4 - There is No Water to Waste: Save the Water: Fight the Dump

Your immediate support and solidarity is needed in Simcoe County, Ontario to STOP the county from building a dump site on top of the Alliston aquifer - forever destroying some of the purest water in the world. In 2006, scientist William Shotyk likened this groundwater to "the cleanest layers of ancient arctic ice".

Community members have fought tirelessly against the Site 41 project for over fifteen years but it is scheduled to open this fall and construction or 'de-watering' of the site HAS BEGUN. Now, more than ever, we need to support the community, help to oppose the dump site and say NO to the destruction of a pristine water source in our own backyard. There will be a March, Rally and Concert on July 4th!

MOVIE and INFO NIGHT:

WHEN: Friday, July 3, 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: Come to the protest camp to hear Maude Barlow, Stephen Ogden and others talk about Site 41 and water issues both local and global. When it gets dark enough we will show an award winning documentary film called FLOW-For Love Of Water, so bring your lawn chairs for that too.

Campers are welcome to stay over on Friday night. Please let us know beforehand though. There is a strict policy against alcohol, drugs and weapons at the protest camp.

MARCHING: The Walk for Water 2

WHEN: Saturday, July 4, 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Starting at the Elmvale Arena, 14 George St., we will march to Site 41 (approx. 7 kms) and arrive at the Rally just after 1:00 p.m. Bring your picnic lunch and water glass/container. Shuttles will carry your lawn chairs to the Rally and carry you back to the Elmvale Arena afterwards.

Water, in my opinion, is the single most important environmental and human-rights threat of our time, and while millionsaround the world are dying and going thirsty, Simcoe County is about to violate this unique and precious Canadian aquifer.
- Maude Barlow, Chairperson, Council of Canadians and Senior Advisor to the President of the UN General Assembly.

October 23-25
Council’s Annual General Meeting headed to Saint John, New Brunswick

Mark October 23-25 on your calendars – the Council of Canadians' annual general meeting is headed to the east coast! We will be hosting our 24th annual meeting that weekend at the Hilton Hotel in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Canada’s Atlantic region is an area – like many across Canada – that is feeling the pain of the recent economic downturn. The focus of this year’s meeting will be on sharing alternative visions for our economic future; ideas that focus on people, the environment, democracy and equality. We will look at how the current failed economic model, which is based on market priorities, has led to economic instability and uncertainty for families with job losses, rising costs and protection for fossil fuel industries that have devastating effects on the environment. We will talk about ways to pressure governments to recognize the need for change and opportunities to create a just economy for people and the planet.

We hope you will join us.
