The McGuinty government is making important decisions about the future of Ontario’s electricity sector. The government has promised to phase-out coal fired power. A number of nuclear reactors are nearing the end of their natural life. The proposed Green Energy Act, the latest vision for a provincial energy agenda, shows promise in recognizing the opportunities in building a provincial “green energy economy. “ Green, secure and accessible is a campaign for the future of Ontario’s electricity. Like the campaign for a Canadian Energy Strategy, the principles of ensuring energy security and ecological sustainability should drive Ontario’s provincial energy agenda.
This means, in planning for the future of the electricity sector, the Ontario government needs to recognize:
Trade rules and US electricity sector regulations can pose risks to ensuring environmentally-friendly, secure and accessible electricity for the benefit of Ontarians
Enhancing interprovincial energy agreements as well as public and community renewable power generation will help ensure that the benefits of renewable power are in Ontario
Placing more emphasis on affordable and accessible energy conservation and improved energy efficiency measures and supporting made-in-Ontario clean energy technologies will help build a green energy economy
Building a green energy economy that meets energy security needs and is truly sustainable does not include new nuclear developments
