Dec 12th Naughty and Nice Climate Action

Action option 1: The North Pole is Melting: Climate Action Now

The Concept:

Your chapter and your friends make a colourful protest at the offices of MPs that have not signed on to the KYOTOPlus commitment. You can bring a copy of the KYOTOplus politicians pledge and encourage the MP to get off the “naughty” list by signing.

The Arctic ice cap is melting, we must act now. Santa and the elves with placards deliver a container of “tar sand” in lieu of a lump of coal.

Props:

  • Santa and elf costumes (see below) cost $5 to $8 and are available from Dollarama
  • Placards (sign I, sign II, sign III, sign IV - print them off on any computer and combine 4 to make a large display)
  • “Tar Sand”- a simple mix of soy sauce and dirt from your garden in a large, transparent glass or plastic container such as a mason jar
  • Naughty and Nice List
  • Stocking with MP’s First name written on it (black marker on a dollar store stocking)
  • candy canes and fact sheets to give to any passersby
  • a camera to capture it all

Action option #2: The world wants a real deal

There's a global mobilization—organized by many different groups in the TckTckTck coalition, the Global Climate Campaign and 350.org—planned for the weekend of December 12 - right in the middle of the Copenhagen climate conference.

There will be big rallies on Saturday in many cities around the globe, and on Sunday communities of faith the world over will ring church bells, beat drums, blow horns -- all 350 times.

TCKTCKTCK is launching The World Wants a Real Deal – an exciting global action to rally hundreds of thousands of people across the world with a clear message to leads: the world wants a real climate deal – one that is fair ambitious and binding. The World wants a real deal is proposing two central actions. These actions are also being endorsed by 350.org which is encouraging all participants to symbolically include the number 350 (stands for 350 parts per million which leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere)

Candle light vigil

  • Around the world people will gather at iconic and strategic locations in their communities, and will light candles of hope to stand in solemn solidarity with the citizens of the nations whose very survival is threatened by the climate crisis.
  • Vigils can be small, medium and large; in homes, targeting offices of elected leaders and significant locations in local communities, on December 12 at dusk. The vigils will help create a global moment of expectation and hope that leaders will agree to a Real Deal.
  • Find useful organizing tips and materials at: www.350.org/vigil-guide
  • Register your vigil with 350.org at: www.350.org/vigil

Signature walls

  • Signature walls will be erected in the capitals of key cities in the climate change negotiations. These are physical walls placed n prominent and iconic places. The centre point of the day will come at dusk when people are encouraged to gather at the walls with their candles to hold their vigil. Participants will be encouraged to write their wants from politicians on the wall to kick-start the walls for the rest of the week.
  • Why not organize a signature wall in your community?
  • TCKTCKTCK is providing a number of resources to help organize candle vigils and signature walls which are available here.

Find out whether there is an action happening in your community that you can join at:
