The Nelson Chapter of the Council of Canadians, Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free B.C., and the Kootenay Direct Action Community are organizing a full-day non-violent direct action (NVDA) training workshop on Saturday May 3 at the Oxygen Arts Centre in Nelson, British Columbia.
The training features our Vancouver-based organizing staff Leila Darwish and Brigette DePape, along with Randy Janzen, an instructor in the peace studies program at Selkirk College.
Kootenay Direct Action Community activist Montana Burgess says, “So many people I talk to want to take some form of action. They have signed petitions, written letters, attended events, but they want to take the next step. This training is the next step that will give our community the tools to come together and take action to stop the erosion of democracy in our country.”
The Harper government is expected to announce its decision on the controversial 525,000 barrels-per-day Enbridge Northern Gateway tar sands pipeline by June 19. If the Harper government approves the pipeline as expected, both court challenges and direct action will be key ways to stop the pipeline.
