Fracking is a controversial method of extracting natural gas that is trapped deep inside shale rock formations. Millions of litres of water, sand, and tens of thousands of litres of toxic chemicals are blasted into the ground at extremely high pressure, creating cracks that allow pockets of natural gas to be released.
The fracking process uses vast and unsustainable amounts of water, much of which becomes so contaminated it cannot be returned to the watershed. The water comes from municipal sources, surface and groundwater, and is often trucked to the site. And fracking threatens our vital water sources in a number of ways – injections of toxic chemicals near aquifers, injected fluids remaining trapped in the rocks for decades, the leftover fluid waste often stored in large open pits.
Alarmingly, while the fracking industry is rapidly expanding in almost every province across the country, our federal and provincial governments have not established sufficient regulations for safety standards for something as essential to life and health as drinking water sources.
It's vital that we pressure the federal government to act now by implementing appropriate groundwater protection laws to ensure that our water, people’s health and the environment are protected from unnecessary and dangerous contamination.
