TAKE ACTION: The 2014 Health Care Accord

Canada is facing an important next step in our medicare history.  In 2014, the current Health Care Accord – the deal that sets funding and health care service delivery agreements between the federal and provincial and territorial governments – expires and must be renegotiated. In the lead-up to these negotiations, we need to remind federal politicians of how much Canadians need and value our public health care system.

Eighty-six per cent of Canadians support a publicly funded health care system. The 2014 Health Care Accord negotiations should be used to strengthen and expand medicare, and recommit to the principles of the Canada Health Act. While there has been a lot of rhetoric about our health care system not being sustainable, several reports released in 2010 and 2011 show just the opposite. Medicare costs have risen slowly at 5-7 per cent since 1980. However, costs are rising quickly in the private health care sector – especially with the soaring cost of prescription drugs – which have increased by 7.5-10 per cent per year.

In 2004, the Health Care Accord included a plan to bring catastrophic drug coverage to Canadians. Unfortunately, Canadians are still waiting for this plan to be implemented. The upcoming negotiations give our federal government an opportunity to establish a national pharmacare plan which would bulk purchase prescription drugs and save Canadians and provincial insurance plans up to $10.7 billion annually.
