In 2004, genetically modified (GM - also called genetically engineered or GE) wheat was rejected by farmers and consumers across the globe, and yet industry is now working to prepare the way for GM wheat.

DETAILS:
On May 14, 2009 industry groups in Australia, Canada and the US pledged to "work toward the goal of synchronized commercialization of biotech traits in our wheat crops." On June 1, 2009, CBAN worked with 14 groups from Australia, Canada and the US to issue a joint statement reminding Monsanto and industry groups that GM wheat has already been soundly rejected - and we reiterated our pledge to stop commercialization.

Sign the statement: “In light of our existing experience with genetic engineering, and recognizing the global consumer rejection of genetically engineered wheat, we restate our definitive opposition to GE wheat and our commitment to stopping the commercialization of GE traits in our wheat crops.”

CONTEXTE:
Le 14 mai 2009, un consortium d’acteurs industriels de l’Australie, du Canada et des États-Unis ont annoncé leur intention d’introduire, simultanément et sur une échelle commerciale, des traits transgéniques (OGM) dans nos cultures de blé. Le 1 juin 2009, le RCAB, en collaboration avec 14 associations de l’Australie, du Canada et des États-Unis, a publié un communiqué dans lequel il rappelle à ces acteurs et à Monsanto que le blé OGM a essuyé un refus définitif de la part de la société civile en 2004, et réitère son intention de faire échec au nouveau projet de commercialisation du blé OGM.
QUE PEUVENT FAIRE LES ORGANISATIONS?
Si vous êtes membre d’un groupe ou association, un syndicat, ou une corporation professionnelle, demandez à son instance décisionnelle d’endosser la campagne mondiale contre le blé OGM en signant, au plus tard le 31 août 2009, la déclaration d’opposition mondiale affichée sur www.rcab.ca/bleOGMlettre.
Texte de la déclaration : “Étant donné notre expérience jusqu’à présent des manipulations transgéniques, et puisque nous prenons acte du refus mondial du blé OGM exprimé par les consommateurs, refus que nous appuyons, nous réitérons notre opposition définitive au blé génétiquement modifié, et nous renouvelons notre engagement à empêcher la commercialisation des caractères transgéniques dans nos cultures de blé.”
