ACTION: 10,000 petitions to be delivered to the Chateau Montebello

August 20, 2007

Today, we will try to deliver a petition signed by more than 10,000 Canadians over the past few months opposing the Security and Prosperity Partnership.

The petitions says:

-----

Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to urge you to cease all talks leading to deeper integration between Canada and the United States, including the next Security and Prosperity Partnership leaders summit in Canada this summer.

I am very concerned that our government is forging ahead with the deep integration agenda enshrined in the SPP, without any public input or parliamentary debate.

Corporations such as Wal-Mart, Lockheed Martin, Manulife Financial, Chevron and Suncor Energy certainly should not be deciding the future of our country and drafting government policy behind closed doors.

Therefore I demand that the North American Competitiveness Council be disbanded, and that the complete listing of the SPP working groups and the details of their meetings be disclosed to the public.

And finally, I insist that you consult with Canadians in a meaningful way on Canada-U.S. relations and bring the SPP to the House of Commons for a full debate and vote.

I want you to know that I am joining with thousands of other Canadians in making these demands as part of a massive Stop the SPP campaign being organized by The Council of Canadians and other social justice groups.

For the sake of Canadian sovereignty, democracy, our precious public health care, social programs, culture and our environment, I urge you to meet the demands of the people of Canada instead of just obeying big-business directives.

I look forward to your speedy reply to my letter.
