The Council of Canadians' 25th Annual General Meeting
took place
October 22-24, 2010 in Ottawa.
For 25 years now the driving force of the Council of Canadians has been people power. Our organization formed in 1985, bringing people together for political action and a new era of citizen advocacy. Our first fight was against the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement and we worked against its expansion into the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
As our members and chapter activists gathered in Ottawa, trade negotiators and government representatives were in the fifth round of secret talks to work out details of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). CETA has been described as NAFTA-plus. It promotes deregulation, privatization and increasing corporate power over the public interest.
At the 2010 AGM we proudly celebrated our 25 year history of speaking out against unfair trade deals by Building People Power. Our keynote speakers addressed the potentially devastating effects of CETA, and spoke to a different – and better – future that values people over profits.
Here are some highlights:

Annual Meeting Turns the Tide in Saint John, Canadian Perspectives, Spring 2010
Amidst the worst global economic crisis to hit in decades, our 2009 Annual General Meeting focused on why the current economic model — based on consumerism, unsustainable growth and market priorities — has failed. Through keynotes speakers, panels and workshops, we looked at alternative ways to organize our economic future, ways that put people and the planet first. We gathered in Saint John, New Brunswick, last October with our members, allies and chapter activists from across the country to share ideas on how to “turn the tide” towards positive change and a just economy.
