The Council of Canadians’ 24th Annual General Meeting
Canada’s East Coast is no stranger to hard times. But like many areas of the country, Atlantic Canada is feeling the pain of the worst economic crisis to hit in decades. The focus of this year’s meeting will be on sharing alternative visions for our economic future -- ideas that focus not on market projections, cyclical recoveries and corporate profits, but on people, the environment and democracy. We’ll look at how the current failed economic model, based on market priorities, has led to the current economic downturn, with the resulting uncertainty for families suffering job losses, rising costs and an economic recovery pinned on promoting the fossil fuel industry and its devastating effects on the environment. But more importantly, we’ll talk about ways to get governments to recognize the need for lasting change and opportunities to create a just economy for everyone – both people and the planet.
We hope you can join us.
Dear friends,
On behalf of the Saint John Chapter, and Board members Leticia Adair and Marion Moore, I am happy to invite you to our 24th Annual General Meeting in Saint John, NB, October 23-25, 2009.
For years, Canadians have been told that freer trade, fewer regulations and bigger global markets will bring prosperity to everyone. But after more than 20 years of export-oriented trade, we know that’s not true. While big corporations and private investors have profited, people and the environment have paid a high price. The failed economic model that is based on consumerism and unsustainable growth no longer works. It’s time for positive change where we all buy locally, rely on renewable energy, and better recognize the need for publicly-owned and managed services and resources. Our AGM is an opportunity to learn more about these issues from our wonderful speakers and panelists and to share the knowledge of our members from across the country to develop strategies for the important work that lies ahead.
I hope to see you there!
Yours,

Maude Barlow
National Chairperson
