TURNING THE TIDE: A Just Economy for People and the Planet

The Council of Canadians’ 24th Annual General Meeting

The Council of Canadians will be hosting its 24th Annual General Meeting October 23-25, 2009 at the Hilton Hotel in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Heading to the Canada’s East Coast and an area – like many across Canada – that is feeling the pain of the recent economic downturn, the focus of this year’s meeting will be on sharing alternative visions for our economic future; ideas that focus on people, the environment, democracy and equality. We will look at how the current failed economic model, which is based on market priorities, has led to economic instability and uncertainty for families with job losses, rising costs and protection for fossil fuel industries that have devastating effects on the environment. We will talk about ways to pressure governments to recognize the need for change and opportunities to create a just economy for people and the planet.

October 23, Free Public Forum, 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Featuring Keynote Speakers:

Maude Barlow, National Chairperson and Senior Advisor on Water Issues to the President of the United Nations

Garry Leech, independent journalist, author and lecturer at Cape Breton University

John Cavanagh, Director of the Institute for Policy Studies, Washington, DC, U.S.

October 24, Plenary panels and workshops, 8:45 a.m. – 5:15 p.m.
Registration is required.

October 25, The Council’s business meeting, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
